Super U Podcast | The Battle Within: How to Silence Self-Doubt and Lead with Courage
What happens when the biggest battle isn’t happening around you—it’s happening inside your head?
On this episode of Super U, Erik Qualman sits down with retired U.S. Navy Captain, engineer, leadership expert, author, and speaker Dr. Jenn Donahue. During her 27-year military career, Jenn built a bridge across the Euphrates during the Iraq War, commanded an 800-person battalion in Afghanistan, and survived an assassination plot. Yet she reveals that one of her toughest battles wasn’t enemy fire—it was self-doubt.
Jenn shares how a toxic boss nearly broke her confidence, why you shouldn’t let your “head win,” and how to recognize the inner voices that keep us stuck, including her “mean little voice” and “sneaky little bastard.” She also explains why everyone needs a “battle buddy,” how great leaders see the individual rather than just the organization, and why the best leaders focus on making their people better.
This is a powerful conversation about resilience, leadership, self-awareness, trusting your team, and finding the courage to become who you’re meant to be.

“It seemed like in different years, there were different things that were needed from people. But what I’ve seen over the last several years is that a lot of leaders have become much more self-aware.
When I first got in, everybody was a yeller. I mean, everybody was yelling. Apparently, that was how you got people to do things—you yelled at them. But over the last several years, I’ve noticed that’s really been tamped down quite a lot.
A lot of people are understanding how to lead better, and that’s what I’m seeing. The people who are really getting promoted—and promoted quickly—are the ones who look at their troops. They’re not necessarily looking at themselves; they’re looking at their troops and thinking about how to make them better.
I have a very good friend who’s now a Commodore, and I’ve watched him throughout his career. He excels at this. I’m like, “Okay, he’s going to be an admiral. He’s definitely going to be an admiral,” just because of the way he is and the way he treats people.
But he gets things done because of that.”
