Can AI Make Us More Human? | Erik Qualman on Focus, Leadership & AI (from the Nice Business Podcast)
What if AI could help us become more human, not less?
In this episode of the Super U Podcast, Erik Qualman joins Richard Train and Jim Bob Howard on the Nice Business Podcast to explore how leaders can embrace artificial intelligence without losing sight of what matters most: human connection.
Erik shares why he prefers the term “amplified intelligence,” how AI can help us spend less time on mundane tasks and more time building meaningful relationships, and why adapting to new technology is about embracing change rather than fearing it.
Through real-world examples from Disney and Ford, Erik explores the power of customer-first thinking, simplifying your organization’s mission, and focusing on the BIG things instead of getting caught up in the BUSY work. He also shares insights from his book, The Focus Project, and explains why the best technology strategy starts with understanding the experience you want to create for your customers.
The big takeaway? Technology should remove friction, strengthen relationships, and give us more time for what matters most.

Episode Preview:
“AI is not going to take your job, but someone who knows how to use AI might. In fact, artificial intelligence is a bit of a misnomer. It should really be called amplified intelligence.
When used effectively, AI can actually decrease screen time and increase face-to-face interaction. The goal is to use it to reduce mundane, repetitive tasks so you can spend more time focusing on what matters most: human connection. Of course, it’s not all going to be, as my kids say, rainbows and unicorns.
But we always adapt, right? Think about seatbelts. At some point, we realized they were a good idea. Many years later, we eventually mandated that everyone wear them. We tend to figure things out, but it takes time when new technology comes along.
So, none of this is entirely new. It’s just that the new always scares people. The key is to look at the frameworks we’ve used in the past and figure out how to apply them to emerging technologies.”
