“Let’s go back in time and tell me the first time that you ever made a dollar that you were actually excited about.”
“It was a long time ago—I was in elementary school, growing up outside of Detroit, Michigan. I started selling marigold flowers door-to-door.
If you’ve ever played with marigolds, you know they break into thousands of tiny seeds. I would take those seeds, put them into small cups, and sell them for 25 cents each. Thankfully, there were plenty of nice parents in the neighborhood willing to buy them—and even plant them—so it worked out pretty well.”
“Was that something that came naturally to you, or were your parents encouraging you to do that?”
It’s funny—I never really thought of it as entrepreneurship at the time. But looking back, and especially as more people ask me about it in interviews, I realize… yeah, I guess it was.
By eighth grade, I took it a step further and started something called Swish Magazine because I loved college basketball. Back then, the only way to get information was through printed magazines, so I subscribed to all of them, compiled the best insights, and created my own version.
Then I sold Swish Magazine—and even sold advertising in it.”
