“Having loved fashion my whole life, but having had nothing to do with creating fashion until I started Watson, there were some things I did that I would encourage other people who might be thinking about starting a business not to do. And I would say that not to move as quickly as I did, because I definitely made some mistakes with the very first line, and I didn’t catch some things that I should have.

For instance, there’s — so you can see me, our listeners can’t, but I’m going to show you — you see the bottom of the zipper here? Yes. So I forgot, I didn’t realize until we had the first run that there was a hole at the bottom of the zipper that we hadn’t covered. And once — it didn’t bother anybody else who was buying them, but it bothered the heck out of me. And I felt it didn’t look as expensive as they were to manufacture, and it really upset me.

I thought, if I had taken my time and hadn’t rushed, I would have caught that before we produced all these garments. And, you know, once I caught that and we covered it properly, there were lots of things — the, you know, things about the, the, the thumb hole — that they weren’t reinforced as well as I would have liked. So little things like that, that I would say, you know, when you take your time, when you really dot your I’s and cross your T’s. And I think my, my instinct — I’m a little bit impulsive by nature — I like to just get things done. I’m the kind of person, if you want to get it done, you give it to me, and I’ll get it done.

But now I have really learned that you need to take your time. I don’t, I don’t let a SKU get made unless I know for certain, A, that it’s going to appeal to a wide audience. And also, I had to rely on other people to say, you know, you may not love that fabric, but it’s going to have great appeal to a lot of people. So, you know, listening to people, being — I’m a great — and my team always tells me this, that I’m very good at not having to have the last word. I listen, I’ve surrounded myself by people I really love and respect.”
