“…And it’s funny because if you remember Pokemon, PokemonGo, which is still quite popular, but at the time, it was like white hot. I went into a cafe, and the manager of that cafe, I talked to her because I saw a sign like PokemonGo and had just gotten literally wiped out a second ago. I go this is crazy. You have colored chalk on your chalkboard in this coffee shop that says if I dropped some “incense,” which if you remember in that game if you didn’t play it, basically to try to catch these Pokemon. It’s virtual reality. So you literally could see that Pokemon at the gas station, or you could see the Pokemon sitting at a table at this cafe by your phone, you’d look at your phone, and you’d see Pikachu or whatever Pokemon character was sitting on that chair and you needed to capture them with your phone.
So on this chalkboard at the cafe, it said to drop some Pokemon incense and if you drop this digital incense that attracted digital Pokemon to that location, so a real location like the gas station or like this cafe, we’ll give you a free cup of coffee. Well, the incense was 99 cents. A cup of coffee at this place is about five bucks. So unless you’re completely awful at math, it’s a no-brainer to drop this incense to get the free cup of coffee. And I go, “This is crazy that you’re doing this… tell me about it. Because I don’t know anything about this game. I don’t know anything about it.” But all my teammates were super excited about it, my team wanted to do it. So I said, Sure, go ahead and do it.
Now a couple of weeks later, I check in with her and still see the sign, she’s still doing it. Something must be going well. And so I talked to the manager, and I said, How’s it going? How’s the Pokemon? She goes, “Erik, I can’t believe it. Our sales are up 77%.” So I thought it was great that she was willing to trust her employees and her teammates to do something even though she had no idea what it was. And it raised her business 77%.”
