“There’s always a trade-off. You’re trading your time. So you’re trying to figure out, what are those tradeoffs and how does it look. Harmony is a good word because, for example, I like to do handwritten notes to our partners to thank them, and so then you can get the girls involved. So I handwrite the note. I’m a visual person. I want the note to stand out, so I’ll draw (I’m not a very good artist)… I just draw some image, whatever that might be, “I was so lucky to be on stage.” So it might be a four-leaf clover, but then the girls can color that in. I hand them off, they color them in, and I can say, hey, my girls helped me with this. They might address the letter as well. And they know it’s just being human, right? I’ve got kids, yeah, it’s like kids handwriting coming to you that’s fine because they’re sitting there helping, you know, put the stamps on those envelopes, helping writing. So that’s what I mean.
Look for those times when there is harmony… like you got to figure out what works best for you and your family and everyone’s different. For me, I’ve learned you got to put these guard rails in place. What does it look like? So for me, basically, I look at my schedule every day as much as I can for weeks out and, I call it “cowboy and cowgirl scheduling.” You want to fence off specific times for yourself, and you want to leave some wide open space for thinking. So think about Texas has fences and then wide open space– if anyone’s familiar with it, but that’s why we call it cowboy scheduling. You want to fence off specific times for yourself and for your family and also make sure that your schedule is not completely packed; that you have wide open spaces for thinking time and to relax and that kind of reset. So for me, at the family level is basically when you hit five o’clock, it’d be rare that I do anything beyond five o’clock [that time] set aside for me, driving my girls to their sporting events, watching their events, and just making sure you take advantage of that. But also then it helps you if you’re thinking about watching a TV show or watching Tiktok for two hours, you now know that that’s stealing time from your family, so that’s harder to do, like when I’m on the road, if I’m on the road in a hotel, that’s when I’ve gotta be really productive with work because I’m away from the family.”
