Matter Follows The Mind
Erik sat down with the owner and CEO of the Nelson Artz Group, Nelson Artz. They discuss Nelson’s career, he shares stories about Roger Federer, the rise in popularity of the sport of Pickleball during the pandemic, why those who play tennis are estimated to live up to 9.7 years longer than those who don’t, and much more!
Alongside his role as managing director and co-initiator of the “Tennis Is Us” initiative, he is also dedicated to the global promotion of tennis. With his book “Arriving Today in Tomorrow,” he was an early advocate of the digital revolution of mobile internet and its impact on marketing. His mantra, “Matter follows the mind,” reflects his belief that great ideas are always the starting point.

“The mind is always first, and matter you know, follows the mind. I think that [when] you’re really not sure, you have any barriers, when you start to have an idea, and you see it when you look in history, right? A lot of great inventions were crazy ideas. And a lot of people, maybe have said, “This is impossible, you know. It’s not possible that you can do it.” And maybe I answer with a little anecdote of my life here, because I’m from Germany. I’m German, you know, I grew up in a very small town here. I was a tennis player, and when I finished school, I became a tennis coach. And people around me felt [that was] crazy, but I did what I love to do. You know, the idea was, I want to be in tennis. Then Wilson was a sponsor of mine, of my tennis academy, and I got in touch with the marketing manager of Wilson, and we talked about a project. And I was already interested in sports marketing, but I was 19 years old, really young kid, right?
Anyways, we stayed in touch, and I created a little first project for them, and then I said to everybody, my tennis students, “I want to become the global agency of Wilson Sporting Goods” in racquet sport. And everybody said, you know, “You’re totally crazy kid, go back on the court, play some balls over the net, and all will be fine.” And sure enough, I became the global agency of Wilson, you know. And it was a small idea. I was somebody, no one in Germany, you know, and then now I will celebrate my 30th anniversary with this brand next year. And this is what I give my kids– I have two daughters and the best advice, you know, start with an idea and then go for it. You know, even if people think you are totally crazy.”
