Is The Metaverse Here?

In today’s episode, stuck in Nantucket, Erik sits down and answers a few questions regarding the Metaverse and Sheryl Sandberg’s legacy with Facebook. In futurism and science fiction, the metaverse is a hypothetical iteration of the Internet as a single, universal and immersive virtual world that is facilitated by the use of virtual reality and augmented reality headsets. In colloquial use, a metaverse is a network of 3D virtual worlds focused on social connection. In addition, Sheryl Sandberg serves as Chief Operating Officer of Meta Platforms, a position from which she announced, on June 1, 2022, that she is stepping down in the fall of 2022. She is also the founder of LeanIn.Org.

Is The Metaverse Here?

Episode Preview:

“Metaverse is already here. Also, people think it’s this or that thing when it’s really a thing. It’s more augmented reality. So if you look at Tim Cook, he’s looking more at the augmented reality side, whether that is going to convert the air pods into that augmented reality, put a little camera on them, possibly maybe they’ll have some glasses that coordinate with the air pods. But think about wearables, as the air pods are already here. So unlike Zuckerberg, who’s trying to get you to wear one of these giant Oculus things on your head, which is really tough to do. And once you lose that peripheral vision, often you don’t like it. We don’t like it. We want to see what’s coming up on the side of us or behind us. We want to see what might attack us and what the prey is. So it goes back to just our innate biology when you think about it, or if you’re in a movie theater. Most of us don’t like the complete surround, we’d like to see what’s going on the side of us that peripheral vision.

But anyway, with the Metaverse, it’s probably a lot going to be augmented reality as well. So think about this. So if you remember PokemonGo the game where you’re catching the Pokemon people were getting hit by cars, cars running the street trying to get that Pokemon that’s augmented out and think about that at the next level. So let’s say you’re sitting down and having dinner and you’re on the beach, so you’re having a nice dinner on the beach, and all of a sudden your 14-year-old son dives under the table because in his game, so let’s say he’s using some air pods with a camera on them in his game. You can see there’s a battleship about to shoot fire into that restaurant. And so that’s kind of the augmented reality the first movers so to speak, we think about Mata the first movers are going to be gaming. So gaming is going to be huge.”
